In its third annual CICS report released today, H&W Computer Systems (H&W) is disclosing the results and analysis of the 2012 CICS® survey that leading mainframe publication z/Journal conducted. In addition to announcing the 2012 results, the new report compares this year’s findings to those from 2011 and 2010 and explains their significance in the context of the modern IT environment. H&W is providing these findings through a special arrangement with z/Journal.

"Normally, we don’t release results that we collect in surveys we perform, but the data in…

The way we dealt with savings in IT in the past was often more tactical than strategic, with results we didn’t always anticipate. Can you honestly say we really did do proper risk analysis when we were asked to cut another 10 percent? The effects of years of cost-cutting exercises have taken some time, but they’re finally hitting us at exactly the worst possible moment.

Today, every transaction counts more than ever before. People are shopping around more than they used to because they simply have less to spend. And by “people,”…

With a network of thousands of independent insurance representatives throughout the U.S. and Canada selling term life insurance, Primerica’s corporate commitment to 24x7 processing with continuous availability and support goes without saying, as does its commitment to zEnterprise technology in its data centers. However, supporting and building upon a sound technology base also includes the ability to grow staff along with the technology and to implement more effective technology monitoring and problem diagnosis and resolution tools.

“One of the areas we had identified for improvement was DB2 problem resolution for our zEnterprise-resident data…

When people think of groundbreaking medical advances, they think of Boston, New York, maybe Los Angeles or Houston, but not Orlando. Florida Hospital, a major faith-based, full-service, academic and teaching healthcare system headquartered in Orlando, however, might change that.

Breakthrough medical insights are expected as Florida Hospital begins sifting through the clinical data from the system’s eight hospitals. Facilitating the analysis is Cognos 8 running on a z10 and DB2 10. The hospital’s initial plan called for the use of IBM’s Smart Analytics Optimizer (SAO) with its data warehouse on their z10, but…

Storage

May 16

The delivery of IT services is more difficult today than ever due to several factors. First is the constant growth of data volumes that not only stress primary storage but also make backup and recovery extraordinarily difficult. This is exacerbated by users’ much higher expectations for data availability that in turn severely restrict backup windows and restore times. In addition, the expanding use of virtualization and cloud-based services give users a taste of immediacy and location-independence they lap up like hungry dogs; virtual machines can be created in minutes, and data can be accessed via the cloud rapidly…

z/VSE 5.1 has been available for order since late November 2011. The key building blocks for user exploitation of z/VSE 5.1—third-party vendor system and application software—are ready and available.

A quick survey of products reveals that most Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) have either a new release or a recommended maintenance level for their current release that supports z/VSE Version 5.1.

A Web search for VSE 5.1 will produce numerous references to product support matrixes with the information you need. Also available is an IBM Web page with references to all the ISVs and…

With so many different kinds of mobile devices, applications and users, many companies try to minimize abuse by writing a policy statement providing rules and guidelines. This document is usually three to five pages, starting with a statement of purpose and indicating who the policy applies to. This might be worded as follows:

The purpose of this mobile device policy is to protect company data and ensure the availability of company computing resources. This policy applies to all salaried employees, outside consultants, partners, and anybody representing a partner. This policy applies to use of company-provided mobile devices…

It’s been very hard to write this column. What do you say when one of your closest friends has a near-death experience, and the only thing you can do is sit by his or her side and hope for the best? It’s also been a very quiet period in the Linux on System z world. There isn’t much to talk about from the usual suspects, but I’ve done some digging to find several things that merit discussing in the column.

Probably the first (and most important to the business…

In previous columns, I described a structured approach to evaluating your mainframe security, starting with controls over access to the system. I also described how your security software (RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret) can control system access for each of several paths, including TSO, started tasks, and batch jobs.

Let’s now turn to security software protection of data sets, starting with disk data sets. You will see that a thorough evaluation of file security requires more than just a review of the data set rules in the security software. To verify the exceptional settings described…

In a previous article, “ISPF Power Tools”, we introduced the Data Set List (DSLIST). Here we will examine some of the basic and advanced options available when using the DSLIST.

The DSLIST display generated by ISPF options 3.4 and 11 or the DSLIST command are the most commonly used and versatile options in TSO/ISPF. There are two types of commands you can use with a DSLIST: line commands, which are typed to the left of a data set name on the list, and primary commands, which are…

Transactional integrity is part and parcel of the mainframe era, but it is undergoing some shifts in the age of the Web. Development leaders are finding this as throngs of front-end Web users 'hit' the back-end mainframe. It is left up to the software architect to balance dueling system objectives.

Going forward, both the mainframe and the Web front-end have distinct roles to play, according to a noted industry analyst. James Governor, principal analyst and founder of RedMonk, spoke about mainframe transaction processing at IBM Impact 2012 in Las Vegas in a session on IBM's Z-series and…

In the latest evolution of its Linux push, IBM has added to its non-x86 Linux server line with the introduction of new dedicated Power 7 rack and blade servers that only run Linux. “Hah”, you say! “Power already runs Linux, and quite well according to IBM”. This is indeed true, but when you look at the price/performance of Linux on standard Power, the picture is not quite as advantageous, with the higher cost of Power servers compared to x86 servers offsetting much if not all of the performance advantage.

Enter the new Flex…

Forward-thinking IT execs are eager to tap the dynamic potential of cloud architectures to cut costs by increasing automation and improving service delivery. Those same executives are pondering whether the mainframe has a role in their cloud strategy.

Many developers, architects, and IT managers perceive the mainframe as old, inflexible, closed, expensive, or worse. Perception is reality! Or is it? Is the mainframe really as bad as some say?

From where do these perceptions come? Do they come from the products? The technology? From zEnterprise? From the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX)? From the zEnterprise Unified…

In my March/April column, I mentioned the high-profile research from Vanson Bourne, reporting CIOs’ concerns about the impending mainframe skills shortage. While I think these fears are often overstated, mainframe education and consultancy will likely become significant revenue streams for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in the months and years ahead.

ISVs have been particularly hard hit during the recession, as IBM and the larger vendors have successfully persuaded many users to consolidate their tools and focus on a smaller number of suppliers to save money and resources without migrating away from the mainframe. Some ISVs…

IBM is introducing new offerings to make it easier for business partners and clients to create "patterns of expertise," a new software capability first introduced as part of IBM's PureSystems family of expert integrated systems.

IBM announced these new patterns at its IBM Impact 2012 conference in Las Vegas on April 30. These patterns are designed to streamline the set-up and management of hardware and software resources. PureSystems, introduced in April, is the result of $2 billion in research, development and acquisitions over four years, and has been designed to help change the economics of IT so that organizations…

Storage Attached Network (SAN) is an efficient solution for many storage needs, especially where hundreds of gigabytes or even many terabytes are required. Linux running on z/VM can use SAN nicely, and System z provides Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) adapters to connect to the SAN fabric. But is it that easy? Connect it and it’s done? Not even close. From a z/VM perspective, if you have more than a handful of servers using SAN, things can get daunting quickly. This article describes some of the pain points associated with managing direct-attached SAN (not EDEVs, otherwise…

Over the past three decades, ASG Software Solutions has built a solid reputation as a provider of infrastructure automation software, primarily for IBM mainframe environments, which constitutes 90 percent of its customer base. Thanks to several recent acquisitions, the software company is now providing solutions to help customers automate their cloud environments, too.

The roots of ASG trace back to 1981, the year that former Marine and General Motors system analyst Arthur Allen retired to Naples, Florida, after a 25-year career that culminated in selling his first company, Allen Services Corporation, for $18 million. But instead of playing tennis all…

In late 2011, IBM's premier virtualization product for System z debuted a new feature, z/VM Single System Image (SSI), which dramatically improves the horizontal scalability of z/VM workloads. Available in z/VM Release 6.2, SSI opens the door to easier, more flexible horizontal growth of large-scale virtual server environments by clustering up to four z/VM systems—each capable of running hundreds of virtual servers—in a rich, robust, shared-resource environment. Coordination of access to shared devices and network connections between members, as well as a common repository of virtual server definitions, allows workload to be…
